Perplexity launches Comet, a web browser powered by AI

Perplexity AI has launched Comet, its first AI-powered web browser that aims to transform how users interact with the internet by integrating artificial intelligence at its core. According to reports from TechCrunch, the browser features Perplexity's search engine as the default and includes an AI assistant that can summarize content, answer questions about webpages, and even perform tasks like booking meetings or making purchases on behalf of users.

Perplexity Launches Comet: The AI-Native Web Browser

Perplexity AI has officially launched Comet, its highly anticipated AI-powered web browser, marking a significant shift in how users interact with the internet. With Comet, browsing is no longer just about navigation—it’s about cognition, productivity, and seamless integration of artificial intelligence into everyday online tasks.

Key Features of Comet

Comet’s standout feature is the Comet Assistant, an AI agent that resides in a sidebar and can “see” and understand the content of any active webpage. Users can:

  • Ask questions about YouTube videos

  • Summarize or analyze text in Google Docs

  • Get instant article summaries

  • Compare products across multiple sites

  • Book meetings or make purchases directly from the browser

Comet is built on Chromium, ensuring full compatibility with Chrome extensions and allowing users to migrate bookmarks and settings with a single click. Privacy is a priority, with local data storage and customizable tracking modes—including a strict local-processing option for sensitive tasks. A native ad blocker is also included, distinguishing Comet from Chrome’s more restrictive approach to ad blocking.

AI-Native Browser Experience

Unlike traditional browsers that bolt on AI features, Comet is AI-native. According to the Perplexity blog, it “powers a shift from browsing to thinking.” Users can interact with content through natural conversations, collapsing complex workflows into fluid, intuitive exchanges. The assistant can:

  • Analyze content in real time

  • Find connections between information

  • Answer complex questions about what you’re viewing

  • Conduct entire browsing sessions, letting users focus on what matters most

CEO Aravind Srinivas calls Comet a “cognitive operating system” designed to live alongside users in their daily workflows.

Availability and Pricing

Comet is currently available exclusively to Perplexity Max subscribers, priced at $200 per month. The Max tier, launched just last week, includes:

  • Unlimited access to Perplexity Labs

  • Early access to new features

  • Priority access to cutting-edge AI models (including OpenAI’s o3-pro and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4)

Comet is available for Windows and macOS, with support for more platforms (including mobile) planned for the near future. Users can import Chrome extensions, bookmarks, and settings in one click for a seamless transition.

Strategic Market Implications

Comet’s launch positions Perplexity as a direct challenger to Google Chrome, which currently holds a 66.6% market share. This move comes as OpenAI is rumored to be weeks away from releasing its own AI-powered browser. Perplexity’s aggressive growth—780 million queries processed in May 2025 and monthly growth over 20%—signals its ambition to disrupt the browser and search markets.

The company has secured partnerships with Motorola, is in talks with Samsung, and has even expressed interest in acquiring Chrome if antitrust actions force Google to divest. CEO Aravind Srinivas projects that Perplexity will reach “a billion queries a week” within a year, underlining the transformative potential of AI-native browsing.
